It has been pointed out to me by a good friend that my blog titled “questions” came across as negative and jealous. He is right. (Can you tell I am beginning my mid-life crisis? Only instead of Christie Brinkley in a convertible its super pastors and mega-churches! ) I probably offended some, and maybe a few friends. For that I need to apologize. But I do think in my attempt at humor some people missed the point, so I will say it more clearly…
It seems to me that today’s church has created an atmosphere where the only pastors who are deserving of respect are those who…
- Wear Abercrombie and Fitch
- Wear designer rimmed glasses
- Have an athletic build
- Carry an I-Phone
- Play a guitar
- and drink specialty coffees
As a good friend of mine put it, we are serving an “image” of Christianity instead of Christ. And in the process we are doing the exact same thing that we rail against in the boomer generation. They created an image of a Christian who…
- Wears polyester suits
- Wears black rimmed glasses
- Has a pot belly from all the potluck suppers
- Carries a King James Bible
- Plays an accordion
- and drinks lemonade.
Either way we have created a superficial image of Christianity.
Let me be very clear about how I feel about Perry Noble. I believe him to be…
- authentic
- passionate about the Kingdom
- an awesome leader
- a master communicator
- a model husband and father
- and one deserving of my utmost respect.
I hope that this clarifies things just a little bit.

I know where you were, and are, coming from. As a pastor in a small rural church (~40) I often have the same thoughts! I listened to a sermon by Mark Driscoll (Mars Hill (Seattle)) about how a growing church needs “a dude” – meaning that attractive guy that will draw people in. I realize that’s not me. It will not (unless God works some miracle plastic (and personality) surgery) ever be me! These thoughts don’t just occur to someone going through a mid-life crisis…I think every pastor in the small church setting has them.
I wish I had something inspiring to say, or some great piece of advice to give — but I don’t.
Lord, help us to be the men You want us to be in the places and situations to which You have called us.
